Buying CAT C7 Injectors: What to Confirm Before Ordering

Condition, revision mix, packing and evidence — the short list to settle before you pay for C7 HEUI injectors.

Three Things Decide Which C7 Injector You Need

C7 injector orders go wrong for three reasons, and price is not one of them. The buyer orders common-rail parts for a HEUI engine. Or buys six of one number for an engine that left the factory with two revisions fitted. Or trusts a marketplace title instead of the number stamped on the old unit. Fix those three and the quotation becomes a formality.

Start with the fuel system. Then read every old injector. Then ask for the confirmation in writing, on the quotation, with your part number printed on it.

The system question comes first

A CAT C7 is a HEUI engine. Hydraulic electronic unit injector. It fires on high-pressure engine oil, and the injector body carries an oil side and a fuel side that a common-rail injector does not have. Oil pressure amplifies the injection pressure, and the ECM times the solenoid. No rail, no rail-pressure sensor, no calibration code to program.

So if a listing calls a C7 injector common rail, stop reading. The description is wrong more often than not, and the part behind it usually is too. We have watched C9 HEUI injectors sold under common-rail titles on three marketplaces in the same month.

Then the number, read off the part

The stamped number is the only identifier that survives an engine swap, a rebuild, and a valve cover that was repainted by the last owner. Read it with a light and a rag, all four groups, suffixes included. Photograph it while you are there: typing 238-8091 as 238-809 because the last digit was worn is a two-week delay you can avoid with one photo.

Engine model helps. Serial number helps more, because it narrows the calibration range. Neither replaces the stamp. Send all three when you have them and we will tell you which one carried the decision.

The C7.1 Trap: Two Engines, One Letter Apart

C7 and C7.1 are different engines with different fuel systems, and the names differ by two characters. C7 is HEUI. C7.1 is common rail. Nothing crosses between them: not the injector, not the pump, not the sealing hardware.

This catches experienced buyers, not beginners. A workshop that has run C7 loaders for ten years buys a 2019 machine, orders the number they know by heart, and receives an injector that will not seat. Return freight lands on them, and the machine waits another three weeks.

Our C7.1 line is one number, the 392-9044, and it is not a C7 injector with a different sticker. It is a common-rail injector with a different body, different connections and a different bench routine. Same story one family up: C9 is HEUI and C9.3 is common rail, which is why two injectors with near-identical names share no parts at all.

One habit covers both: order by the stamp, never by the engine name. The name tells you which page to open. The stamp tells you which part to pack.

238-8091 and 268-1835: What the Lists Actually Say

Two numbers cover most C7 requests. The 238-8091 is the one we ship most, and its page lists 38 cross-reference numbers. The 268-1835 page lists 14, and 238-8091 appears among them.

That overlap is where buyers get hurt. A list is an identification aid. It is not a statement that two numbers swap freely in every engine. Both numbers sit on C7 identification tables, both are HEUI, both weigh 1.25 kg and both ship six to a box. That is where the certainty ends until somebody looks at your old unit.

If your stamp reads 10R4763, 20R8059, 241-3238 or 387-9426, send it. Those numbers are on the list and we check them the same way. The list maps a family, though, and a family is not a calibration. Two numbers can be cross-referenced for identification and still differ in nozzle, in valve setting or in the mapping inside the solenoid.

The check takes a person about a minute with the catalog open and a photo on screen. That is the service. A search box matches a string and stops. We match the string, look at the family, and then say out loud what we can confirm and what we cannot. The process is the same one described in our guide on verifying a cross-reference, applied to one engine family.

  • Send the number that is stamped, not the number the parts book suggests for the model year.
  • Send the suffix. A dropped suffix turns a confirmed part into a guess.
  • Send a photo of the stamp when the character is half worn. We would rather read a picture than trust a transcript.
  • Ask which of your numbers the quotation is based on. It should name them.

Mixed-Cylinder Engines: Why Six of One Is Sometimes Wrong

C7 engines are known to leave the factory with different injector numbers across cylinder positions. Workshops report it as a nuisance. Technicians who have pulled covers on enough of these engines treat it as normal production practice, not a fault.

So the order that reads six of 238-8091 can arrive at an engine carrying four of one number and two of another. The fitter finds out at cylinder five, with the machine half apart and the old seals already in the bin.

The fix costs one photo per cylinder. Pull the covers, read six stamps, write them down in firing order. If five read 238-8091 and one reads 268-1835, order five and one. If one stamp is unreadable, send the photo. We will tell you whether it is legible enough to identify or whether the serial has to carry the decision.

There is a second trap in mixed engines, and it is commercial rather than technical. A supplier who wants a simple order will suggest standardizing all six to one number. Standardizing may be correct, but it is a decision for the engine owner with the serial in hand, not for the parts desk looking at a spreadsheet.

A format that works

Write the six numbers as one block of text, in cylinder order, with a note on which cylinder was replaced before. One message beats six, because the quotation can answer all of it at once instead of asking you to confirm twice.

The Pump and the Kit That Come With the Job

Injectors rarely fail alone on a HEUI engine. Low injection control pressure points at the actuator pump, and a pump that is losing pressure will shorten the life of the next set of injectors. If your diagnostic showed low ICP, price the pump in the same order or plan to do the job twice.

The pump numbers that come up with C7 work are the 384-0607 high-pressure pump and the actuator pumps 20R1635 and 319-0675. They look alike on a shelf and they are not the same part. The old pump number and a faceplate photo decide which one ships, and the pump weighs around 12 kg, so it changes your freight more than an injector does.

Kits ride along with the same order. A C7/C9 seal kit adds a few hundred grams and settles the question of reusing old O-rings, which nobody should do on a HEUI injector. Workshops ordering ten injectors usually add ten seal kits and one major overhaul kit for the pump side.

One carton, one packing list, one freight charge. Splitting injectors and seals across two suppliers is how a repair job loses a week to customs paperwork.

If you need to check which machine models sit inside the C7 family before you order, the C7 application page carries that view. This guide stays on the ordering decision.

Packing, Weight and the Freight Number

C7 and C9 HEUI injectors ship six to a box. The box measures 350 x 280 x 400 mm and weighs 10.8 kg. That is a factory export standard rather than a preference, and it is the figure your forwarder will ask for when you request a rate.

Unit weight is 1.25 kg for both 238-8091 and 268-1835. Small number, large consequence. At sixty injectors the difference between a 1.25 kg unit and a 1.4 kg unit is nine kilos, which can be the difference between one carton count and two on an air shipment.

238-8091 C7 injector1.25 kg183-0560 3126 injector1.32 kg363-0493 C9.3 injector0.69 kg

Read the chart with the pumps in mind, because it leaves them out. The 20R1635 actuator pump is about 12 kg on its own. The 319-0675 ships at 10.28 kg in an 11 kg box measuring 300 x 300 x 200 mm. Mixing pumps and injectors in one shipment is normal; quote them as two weights anyway.

Ask for the carton dimensions before you book freight, not after. Sea freight forgives a twenty-kilo error. Air freight does not, and neither does a courier account that bills by volumetric weight.

What the Order Looks Like, Step by Step

Most C7 orders arrive as a message at seven in the morning: a photo of six injectors laid out on a bench, the engine model typed below, and a question about price. That is enough to start, if the stamps are readable.

  • You send the stamps from each cylinder, the engine model, and the quantity per number. A bench photo with the units in cylinder order is the fastest format we receive.
  • We check each number against the catalog and answer with availability, condition of the line, packing and price. Replies go out within two working hours, Monday to Saturday, 8:30 to 18:30 GMT+8.
  • You approve the quotation. Payment runs by T/T with terms stated on the quotation, and nothing is picked before the transfer clears.
  • We select, bench-test and photograph the actual units, then pack them to the factory standard.
  • Packing time is typically 3 to 5 working days after payment. It is confirmed per order, because a mixed order with a pump takes longer than six injectors alone.
  • Shipping is express, air or sea from China. You choose once the carton weights are in front of you.

The step buyers skip is the third one. Approve the quotation in writing, with the part numbers you are authorizing and the warranty terms for that order. A chat message that says ok is not a specification, and it will not help you in a dispute four months later.

If your numbers match nothing we supply, we say so. That reply costs you nothing and saves you the return leg.

Common questions

Asked before this decision

Do I need to remove all six injectors before ordering?

No, but you need all six numbers. Two or three readable stamps usually establish the pattern; any cylinder that reads differently from the group changes the order, so it is worth reaching the awkward ones.

Can a 268-1835 replace a 238-8091?

They appear in each other's identification lists and both are C7 HEUI units. That is not the same as confirming interchange for your engine. Send the old number and the engine serial and we confirm on the quotation.

Is the C7.1 injector a newer version of the C7 injector?

No. C7 is HEUI and C7.1 is common rail. The names are close and the fuel systems are unrelated, so no injector crosses between them.

How are C7 injectors packed for export?

Six per box, 10.8 kg, 350 x 280 x 400 mm, factory export standard. Cartons are photographed before they are sealed.

What is the minimum order for a C7 injector?

One piece. The factory pack is six, so a smaller order is packed from a broken pack inside the standard carton.
